HIRING A FOREIGN WORKER

Canadian Employers interested in hiring foreign workers generally need a document called a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). In order to successfully be granted a LMIA, an employer must show Immigration Canada that they aren’t able to fill the job vacancy locally.

***Without a LMIA foreign workers abroad are not authorized to work in Canada unless they are exempt.

High Wage lmia or Low wage Lmia?

The Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) generally falls into 3 categories.

  • High wage LMIA
  • Low wage LMIA
  • Global talent stream LMIA

As the employer, which LMIA category should you apply under? Most employers are going to select either the High wage LMIA or the Low wage LMIA. The choice between the two will depend on the wage being offered to the foreign worker.

Every province in Canada has a different median hourly wage.

For employers intending on offering a wage higher than or equal to the provincial median hourly wage, the suitable LMIA application would the high wage LMIA.

For employers offering a wage lower than the provincial median hourly wage, the appropriate LMIA application in that case would be the low wage LMIA.

The LMIA application fee is $1000
