Study Permit Extension
Study Permit Extension
Study permits have expiry dates, once that date is reached students must stop studying and leave Canada.
When a study permit is issued to a student for the first time it is usually granted for a period that covers the length of the study program plus an additional 90 days.
This additional 90 day cushion time is given to students so that they have enough time to make a decision, will they be extending their stay in Canada? or will they leave Canada now that their studies have finished?
If the student intends on continuing their studies in Canada, a study permit extension is needed.
This application can be done no later than 30 days before the study permit expires.
The fee for a study permit extension is $100
Study Permit Restoration
If the study permit has already expired then the appropriate course of action is to apply to restore status as a student, which includes a new study permit.
There is a 90 day time limit for this application; it must be done within 90 days of your study permit expiring.
After successful restoration of status as a student, you’ll be given a new study permit which will authorize you to continue studying in Canada until a specified date.
The fee for Study Permit Restoration is $350
Change of Status
For students who would like to remain in Canada longer, but are no longer studying there are 2 2 options:
- To Apply for a Work Permit
- Apply to remain in Canada as a visitor
